Single Pitch Award - Ireland

This course is run by Paul Swail who holds the Mountain Instructor Award (MIA) for BOS (Bord Oiliúint Sléibhe).  BOS is the Irish Mountain Training Board. They are responsible for mountain training in Ireland and are a sub-committee of Mountaineering Ireland (MI).

 

The Single Pitch Award (SPA) scheme provides training and assessment in the skills required to supervise groups during single pitch rock climbing activities. The scope of the award covers personal climbing, group management, crag etiquette, environmental responsitilities and more. The SPA trains and assesses candidates in the delivery of safe, effective and enjoyable climbing sessions for climbers on cliffs, crags and indoor and outdoors climbing walls and towers.

 

Training Course

 

This practical two day training course will cover new skills for managing groups in a single pitch environment and personal climbing skills as outlined in the SPA syllabus. 

 

To attend a training course you must be able to tick the following boxes:

  •    Be at least 18 years old (18 at assessment)
  •    Have at least 12 months of experience at 3 different venues
  •    Have a keen interest in climbing and in supervising groups
  •    Have lead a minimum of 15 routes on leader placed protection
  •    Be a member of Mountaineering Ireland

After training there is a consolidation period during which candidates can develop their own skills through personal practice.

 

Assessment Course Dates

 

This 2 day course will assess your skills related to the SPA syllabus. To attend the training you have to have completed a SPA training course and hold a valid First Aid Certificate (16hrs).
