Core Skills

Course Summary

Like most sports mountain biking can be broken down into a few core skills which, when mastered can provide quick progression from total beginner to confident trail master!  Many of the most experienced bikers we know would've killed for this knowledge when they began biking; it's not cheating, just missing out many hours of trial and error.  Ian is Ireland's most qualified and experienced MTB specific coach and tutor.  As such he has the ability to break down and explain the skills in the ways that are most effective for you as an individual.

 

Course Content

Mountain biking is all about movement.  Ian will assess and improve upon your current abilities to get you flowing over the lumps and bumps in the trail that typify real mountain biking.  Once you have the fundamental movement skills dialled, you'll take drops, corners and technical features in your stride and open up a whole new world of biking possibilities.  These courses really are suitable for all, not just beginners as we place the skills into real trail situations relevant to your current level.

 

The Core Skills are -

Braking - You'd be shocked how many people aren't using their brakes properly.  Essential knowledge to keep you safe!

Using Gears - Likewise!  Learn to use them properly to save energy and allow you to perform all the key biking skills.

Weight Shift - Central to everything you do on a mountain bike.  Learn how to move fluidly to react to the trails.  This will make you able to ride drop-offs.

Cornering - Learn to get smooth through the corners and save energy by maintaining speed.

Manual Drops - Getting the front wheel in the air to drop off obstacles.

Power Assisted Front Wheel Lifts - A wheelie to you and me!  Allows you to get the front wheel over obstacles at slow speeds.

Rear Wheel Lifts - Lifting the back wheel over obstacles.

Trackstands - A temporary pause without having to put your foot down.  Very useful uphill but also brilliant for improving overall balance.

 

A morning of personalised coaching sessions is guaranteed to rapidly enhance your skills.  You'll then head out on to the trails to discover just how much you've improved.  You'll be riding all natural trails to tempt you away from the man made trail centres and open up a whole new world of MTB possibilities in beautiful surroundings.

 
1 Day Core Skills Course

A great introduction for beginners or intermediates, our one day core skills course introduces you to the skills and arms you with the knowledge to go away and practice yourself.

Cost: £85pp (or £170pp for private coaching, discounts apply for 2 or more people)

Ratio: 1:6 Max

Number of days: 1

Included: All Instructional fees and insurance.

Not included: Transport to and from the course venue, lunches and personal equipment.

2 Day Core Skills Course

Being skilled doesn't only relate to what you can do on a bike, you also need to be self sufficient on the trails.  Day two begins by showing you the tools and spares you need to be carrying before demonstrating and teaching you the most common trailside fixes.  Master the art of sorting punctures, broken chains, rubbing brakes and jumping gears so you can enjoy your riding 100% without ever having to walk home.

 

With more time to perfect your skills we'll then take you to some of the top trails around the Mournes to put them into practical situations.  We'll demonstrate how mastery of the core skills will improve your climbing and descending and for the more advanced riders we cover skills like drop-offs and step-ups.  We guarantee that you'll leave as a better rider with more confidence in your own ability and subsequently more enjoyment in your biking.

 

Core skills courses can be combined with local accommodation as part of a holiday.  Contact us for more details.

Ratio: 1:6 Max

Number of days: 2 days, can be arranged for weekday or weekend.
