Climbing Wall Leading Award - Ireland

 

This course is run by Paul Swail who holds the Mountain Instructor Award (MIA) for BOS (Bord Oiliúint Sléibhe).  BOS is the Irish Mountain Training Board. They are responsible for mountain training in Ireland and are a sub-committee of Mountaineering Ireland (MI).

 

The Climbing Leading Wall Award (CWLA) trains and assesses candidates to teach lead climbing on artificial climbing walls with fixed protection.  It builds on the skills acquired in either the Climbing Award Scheme or Single Pitch Award. Candidates must hold either the Climbing Wall Award or Single Pitch Award to access the CWLA scheme.


Training Course

 

 

The CWLA training course is primarily concerned with ensuring good practice when developing leading skills.  It covers the looks at technical competence, lead climbing equipment, belaying, personal climbing skills, the climbing wall environment, wall etiquette, supervising and managing groups, progressive teaching strategies, managing novice leaders and movement skills related to lead climbing.   . 

 

To attend a training course you must be able to tick the following boxes:

 

  •    Be at least 18 years old
  •    Hold either CWA or SPA awards
  •    Have led at least 50 climbs, 25 of which must be fr 6a and above
  •    Have climbed in at least 3 major indoor climbing walls
  •    Have belayed a leader on at least 50 climbs
  •    Have at least 25 supervising sessions post CWA/SPA

After training there is a consolidation period during which candidates can develop their own skills through personal practice.

 

Assessment Course Dates
