Climbing Wall Award - Ireland

This course is run by Paul Swail who holds the Mountain Instructor Award (MIA) for BOS (Bord Oiliúint Sléibhe).  BOS is the Irish Mountain Training Board. They are responsible for mountain training in Ireland and are a sub-committee of Mountaineering Ireland (MI).

The Climbing Wall Award (CWA) trains and assesses candidates in the skills required to supervise climbers on purpose built artificial climbing walls and boulders. It is ideal for people who work at climbing walls or at venues with permanent or mobile climbing towers. There is also an optional abseil module (often run in conjunction with the Climbing Wall Award) which is about supervising abseiling at climbing walls and towers.

Training Course

The CWA climbing module only training course consists of two days training (12 hrs total) covering both personal and group climbing skills as per the  Climbing Wall Award Syllabus. It is very much a practical training that covers technical competence (equipment, belaying, group belaying) as well as a big emphasis on looking at movement skills (footwork, weight transfer, twisting - to name a few) and group management, etiquette, supervision and bouldering.

To attend a training course you must be able to tick the following boxes:

  •    Be at least 17 years old (18 at assessment)
  •    Have at least 6 months of experience of using a variety of climbing walls
  •    Have an interest in climbing and in supervising groups on climbing walls

If you can tick all of the above boxes, here's what to do next:

  •   You need to register for a Climbing Wall Award logbook with Mountaineering Ireland here and book onto a training course!

This course is delivered on behalf of BOS. The CWA handbook can be found here.
